Indonesia which is a tropical country, stretching around the equator, has high temperatures throughout the year. Even recently, the temperature can reach 35 degrees Celsius. With this temperature, it’s not only the air that makes you hot, you can feel the stinging heat on your skin. This condition could get worse, the air temperature continues to rise, if not accompanied by climate change mitigation.
On the other hand, the question arises to what temperature humans can withstand heat. The answers are available in the journal Science Advances where a 2020 study did a wet bulb temperature test or wet-bulb temperature (TW) which reached 35 degrees Celsius.

Wet bulb temperature is measured with a thermometer covered with a cloth soaked in water to measure heat and humidity. This humidity and temperature can affect how humans can survive extreme weather.
Colin Raymond, a postdoctoral researcher at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory who studies extreme heat, argues, “if the humidity is low but the temperature is high, or vice versa, the wet bulb temperature probably won’t approach the human body’s critical point.”
However, if the humidity and temperature are both very high, the wet bulb temperature can rise to dangerous levels.

Live Science gives an example, when the air temperature is 46.1 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity is 30%, the wet bulb temperature is only 30.5 degrees Celsius.
Another thing happens when the air temperature is 38.9 degrees Celsius and the relative humidity is 77% so that the wet bulb temperature becomes 35 degrees Celsius. “If the wet bulb temperature rises above human body temperature, you can still sweat, but you won’t be able to cool your body to the temperature it needs to operate physiologically,” Raymond explains. At that point, the body becomes hyperthermic above 40 degrees Celsius.
“A wet bulb temperature of 35 degrees Celsius will not cause immediate death, however; it may take about 3 hours for the heat to persist.”
Then, what will happen when the temperature exceeds 35 degrees Celsius and the body temperature is higher than that? Which locations experience it? Read more here of!
