Viruses build protein factories in our cells. We are trying to figure out how they work to find drugs.
We will show paper models of viruses and explain how viruses after entering our cells use the cell to build their protein factories to produce more genetic material and more viruses. Our goal is to find small molecules (future drugs!) That play the role of the grains of sand that stop the machines in these factories. Understanding the structure of these machines is important to understanding how they work. To see the structure you have to make crystals. We show in a hands-on workshop how we can make crystals from a protein and observe them under a magnifying glass.
