Understanding the Soviet comedy ‘Girls’ – Why Foreign Viewers Can’t Enjoy It

The difference in mentality prevents you from fully enjoying the picture.

After its premiere, the comedy “Girls” entered the list of classics of Soviet cinema. The audience was delighted with the story of Tosya Kislitsyna and her colleagues at the timber industry enterprise, which is why the Soviet authorities decided to show the film to foreign viewers. But those, as it turned out later, did not share this opinion at all.

As viewers still admit, they do not understand Yuri Chulyukin’s picture at all. The behavior of the main characters, their attitude towards each other seems strange to them. Romantic lines for audiences from other countries look like novels by schoolchildren, not serious and adult people.

“I feel like there wasn’t a ton of cultural context for me to understand. All the characters act like schoolchildren.” — writes a viewer from the USA.

The general life of the characters in the film also caused bewilderment. The public cannot understand why the employees of the enterprise are forced to live in the same room, and all the heroes have the right to so brazenly interfere in Tosi’s life.
