Dr. Ali Aouf, Head of the Pharmaceuticals Division at the Federation of Chambers of Commerce, spoke about the reasons for the recent shortage of some medicines and their alternatives on the market.

The reality of the lack of insulin on the market

The head of the Pharmaceuticals Division at the Federation of Chambers of Commerce said during a television intervention that there is a weekly meeting between the Central Bank, the Ministry of Health, the Medicines Authority, and the Unified Purchasing Authority, to discuss the need of the medicine market and provide medicines or medicine supplies and provide them to factories and put them on the markets.

Aouf added: Four months ago, there was a crisis in thyroid medications, but now there is an abundance of locally manufactured thyroid substitutes, with the same effectiveness as imported medications.

The head of the Pharmaceuticals Division at the Federation of Chambers of Commerce explained that the primary purpose of using insulin is to treat diabetics, but some people use it for other purposes, such as weight loss.

Ali Aouf pointed out that the stock of insulin in Egypt is sufficient for 3 months, and any patient facing a drug shortage crisis must call the “15301” hotline, affiliated with the Medicines Authority, to inform him of the location and price of the medicine he is looking for.
