Understanding the Petrichor Phenomenon: Smelling Rain Before it Hits

Well, we can’t ignore it: summer is very dreary as far as the weather is concerned. We don’t really need a weather forecast these days, since it only rains. But did you know that you can smell rain even before it hits? We explain to you how.

Well, we can’t ignore it: summer is very dreary as far as the weather is concerned. We don’t really need a weather forecast these days, since it only rains. But did you know that you can smell rain even before it hits? We explain to you how.

You probably know that typical smell after a rain shower, but you can also smell rain before it even rains. This has to do with the scientific phenomenon ‘petrichor’.

Petrichor

‘Petrichor’ is a portmanteau of the Ancient Greek words for ‘stone’ and ‘blood of the gods’. Australian researchers first coined the term in 1964 and the subject was further explored by scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Earthy scent

But what exactly is that typical smell you smell before it starts to rain? Certain bacteria convert decaying organic material into nutrients for plants and other organisms. These nutrients are contained in the soil and when the soil becomes moist due to rain, the characteristic ‘earthy smell’ spreads through the air. This releases the molecule geosmin, which is responsible for the typical smell.

Carried away by the wind

If it has been dry for a long time, the rotting process has slowed down, but as soon as it becomes moist, that process starts again. When raindrops fall on the ground, the water splashes up and gesosmine ends up in the air. These particles are carried by the wind, so you can smell a rain shower a bit further away.
