Understanding the Mysterious Pneumonia Outbreak in Beijing: Causes and Impact

Jakarta

The World Health Organization (WHO) is urging China to provide detailed information about the ‘mysterious’ pneumonia respiratory disease that is infecting many children. So so far, what is known as the cause of this mysterious disease?

The Chinese Health Authority said that this disease is known to originate from a pathogen. This follows recent reports, which stated that this ‘mysterious’ respiratory disease was triggered by the emergence of a new virus.

Quoted from Fortune, the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and Beijing Children’s Hospital told WHO that there was an increase in outpatient visits and hospitalizations due to the spread of mycoplasma pneumoniae, respiratory syncytial virus, adenovirus and influenza.

This response came after WHO requested information from China regarding cases of undiagnosed pneumonia that had spread in children’s hospitals in Beijing, Liaoning and other places.

At the same time, local Chinese media reported an increase in cases of mycoplasma infection among kindergarten and elementary school children. In older children and adults, who already have strong immune systems, the infection only triggers a mild cold. However, in younger children who are susceptible to pneumonia, the symptoms of the infection can last for weeks.

The media also reported that the hospital waiting room was now filled with anxious parents waiting for their children. The reason is that due to the outbreak of this respiratory disease, children can have to wait up to seven hours to be seen by a doctor.
