Jakarta –
Some time ago, a viral story about a young man in Tasikmalaya, Irfan Ferlanda (29), had diabetes at a young age. It all started when he underwent minor lipoma surgery in August 2023, he was 28 years old at that time. Through a series of examinations, the doctor found that Irfan had high blood sugar levels.
He admitted that he was quite surprised by the doctor’s diagnosis of type two diabetes because the stigma of this disease was closely associated with ‘older people’s disease’.
Irfan admitted that before being diagnosed with diabetes, he had a lifestyle that tended to be unhealthy. One of them is the habit of consuming sweet drinks almost every day.
“In May 2023, he still weighed 90 kg and was 165 cm tall, vaped, worked only sitting, never exercised, and almost every day drank sweets, especially packaged sweet tea. Really almost every day,” explained Irfan to detikcom, Friday (1/12/2023).
Apart from what happened to Irfan, a specialist in internal medicine, Dr. Ketut Suastika, SpPD-KEMD, explained that there are various triggers for diabetes. Not only consuming sweet drinks, he said there are various aspects of lifestyle that are often ignored, which can trigger diabetes.
“A lifestyle that you are not aware of can cause diabetes, namely a sedentary lifestyle or being lazy about moving. Apart from that, you can also eat too much, even consuming too many carbohydrates,” said Dr Ketut when contacted by detikcom, Friday (1/12/2023).
Dr Ketut said that maximum carbohydrate intake should not exceed 50 percent of daily calorie intake. This includes sugar, which is a simple carbohydrate that can increase blood sugar.
These lifestyle factors can cause obesity, which is one of the main risk factors for diabetes. Balancing health with diet and exercise can be a good step to reduce the risk of diabetes.
“Overweight due to calorie intake exceeding expenditure can usually cause obesity,” said Dr Ketut.
In line with Dr. Ketut, internal medicine specialist Dr. Rudy Kurniawan SpPD added that consuming too much food high in fat and salt can also increase the risk of diabetes.
“Consuming foods high in fat and salt can also increase the risk of diabetes. Smoking or vaping, lack of sleep, irregular, sedentary lifestyle will also increase the risk of diabetes,” he concluded.
