Understanding the Factors and Increase in ADHD Diagnosis in Today’s Children

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder affects up to 10% of today’s children. Some studies have shown that in our time this diagnosis is made more often than before. What is the reason for this and what factors can provoke the birth of a child with ADHD in a couple? Clinical psychologist Ekaterina Trizmina (Russia) answered sb.by’s questions.

– According to the World Health Organization, in the last decade, symptoms of ADHD appear in 5-10% of children. More precise statistics are difficult due to different diagnostic criteria and lack of information about this disorder. Nevertheless, experts note that the number of children with ADHD is increasing.

Many factors can influence the likelihood of having a child with this disease – some of them are scientifically confirmed, some remain conjectural. It is well established that the age of the parents matters. Women over 35 and men over 40 are more likely to have a child diagnosed with ADHD than younger parents.

Scientists suggest that genetic causes also play a role. So, if one of the parents has a genetic disease that can be passed on to offspring, then the likelihood of having a child with ADHD increases significantly. Some maternal diseases, including hypertension and diabetes, are also a risk factor.

According to some studies, the development of ADHD may be the result of the influence of bad ecology. However, in most cases, the causes of the disease remain unknown.
