Understanding the Difference Between Hypotension and Anemia: Doctor Explains Causes and Symptoms

Jakarta, NOT Online

Doctor Ita Fajria Tamim explained the difference between hypotension (low blood pressure) and anemia (low blood pressure). He said that low blood pressure or hypotension is often identified as the same thing as anemia or anemia, even though the two are different.

“Even though we have the same symptoms, make sure we understand the differences between the two,” said Dr. Ita in the video entitled Causes People Can Get Anemia and Hypotension which was uploaded by NU Online on Friday (29/12/2023).

He then gave an explanation about hypotension. He said that hypotension or low blood pressure is a condition where our blood pressure is less than 90/60 millimeters hydragyrum (mmHg).

“The number in front, 90, is the condition when our heart is contracting, while the number 60 is the number when we are relaxing,” he said.

He explained that low blood pressure or hypotension can be caused by various things, for example dehydration or lack of fluids, pregnancy, bleeding, heart disease, thyroid hormone disorders and diabetes.

The symptoms of hypotension or low blood pressure are also non-specific and are very similar to anemia or anemia. These include dizziness, blurred vision, weakness, difficulty concentrating, and paleness.

“Because these symptoms are very non-specific, we need to see a doctor if it turns out that the symptoms we are feeling are really interfering with our activities. “Later the doctor will measure us with a sphygmomanometer to find out what our blood pressure is,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ita emphasized that anemia is very different from hypotension. Anemia is an anemia disease. When suffering from anemia, a person will lack red blood cells.

“Anemia is a condition where our body lacks red blood cells which function to bind oxygen and deliver it to all organs of the body, so that if anemia occurs then our body as a whole lacks oxygen,” he said.

He also explained that normal hemoglobin levels are different for each person. Usually in men the norm is above 13 grams per deciliter (g/dL), while in women it is above 12 g/dL. In children and pregnant women, the condition is usually around 11 g/dL.

There are many causes of anemia, so according to Dr Ita, someone who has anemia needs further examination.

“Usually anemia is caused by a lack of iron or can be called iron deficiency anemia, it can also be due to a lack of folic acid or vitamin B12. “Anemia can also be caused by bleeding, then the bone marrow fails to produce red blood cells, chronic kidney disease and so on,” explained Dr. Ita.

He then invited anyone who experiences anemia in the long term to confirm this by seeing a doctor so they can get the right treatment.

“Treatment for anemia depends on the cause. If anemia is caused by iron deficiency, then we treat it with iron tablets and so on, again depending on the cause. “If we also experience symptoms of anemia or hypotension, we determine what the cause is and we treat it according to the cause,” he concluded.
