Understanding the Dark Side of Social Media: The Rise of Begging Scams

Various social networking sites have become a double-edged sword for a long time, which appears in great detail in the recent incident of the woman whose pictures spread in the city of Al-Shorouk while she was lying on the sidewalk in the street, as she claimed that she was ill with cancer and could not find anyone to help her, and soon the pictures circulated Significantly, some went to help her and give her a helping hand.

Indeed, the lady received a lot of immediate assistance, which is what she was aiming for in the first place, and with the intervention of the competent authorities, such as an institution with us, to save a person, the full truth of the lie of the lady, whom many sympathized with, appeared, and the lady soon fled from her place as soon as the members of the institution arrived to help her and transfer her to a human place worthy of her. .

Soon, the posts that were supporting the woman and calling on officials to intervene quickly to save her, turned into awareness posts about falling prey to beggary through social media platforms, and the need to verify information before getting carried away and helping others in begging and illegally acquiring money and aid.

The Foundation published an explanation about the woman’s condition, in which it stated the following: “Concerning the homeless woman in the city of Al-Shorouk..after the amount of pressure from the calls and reports that have not reached the number of messages we have received on the page regarding a homeless woman in the city of Al-Shorouk who is sick with cancer and with her a child and her husband is dead, and her condition is very difficult You can’t bear that she lives on the sidewalk in the street.. and although we don’t have places for women completely, we can’t leave her on the street.

And the Foundation continued through its publication: “The truth is that the team of the Ma’ana Foundation immediately directed to save a person to the place of the communication, and we literally turned on it everywhere, and it was cooperating with us in the search for the “Egyptian House of Zakat and Charities,” which was ready to provide her with housing and work so that she would be in a better place. One of our volunteers was with us at the place, and he was standing beside her, waiting for us to reach her at the specified place for the report, and he informed her that the Foundation would help her and provide her with shelter, but the surprise and shock was that she completely disappeared, after she told him for a few seconds, entering the bathroom in front of you here and coming along, and a lobe of salt and dub In moments that have no effect.. And all the people around the area who reported that she is a beggar turned to us, and according to the testimony of another woman, or rather a friend of hers who is a beggar, she said that she lives here and that she has a house…”!!!

The Foundation stated that begging is a series of endless episodes, but will there be an end to trafficking in people’s feelings with this humiliating scene, and what is the fault of their children?
