Jakarta (ANTARA) – Internal medicine specialist Dr. Dr. Soroy Lardo, Sp.PD, K.PTI, FINASIM reminded the importance of being aware of the critical phase in dengue hemorrhagic fever patients.
According to him, there are still many people who do not understand that the critical phase in dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) patients, namely the third to sixth day of infection, is a dangerous phase which if not handled properly can have fatal consequences.
“This phase is the critical point, the death rate is high,” said Soroy in an online media briefing held on Tuesday (27/2/2024) regarding the management of handling dengue hemorrhagic fever.
In the event organized by the Executive Board of the Indonesian Doctors Association, Soroy outlined the three clinical phases of dengue fever.
In the first phase, the first one to three days of infection, virus levels in the body are high and there is an increase in blood viscosity accompanied by dehydration.
Soroy said, in the first phase, dengue fever patients must be well hydrated, ensuring that their body’s fluid needs are met.
The second phase, the third to sixth day of infection, is the critical phase. In this phase complications can occur such as shock, bleeding and organ damage as well as a decrease in blood platelet levels.
Soroy said that the death rate for dengue fever patients in the second phase is relatively high and good treatment in this phase is the key to preventing serious complications which can be fatal.
Meanwhile, the third phase is the recovery phase. In this phase, patients are generally recommended to rest.
“So, usually I recommend five days of rest because after all the residual virus is still there and the patient in three weeks is still in a sometimes weak condition,” said Soroy.
Dengue hemorrhagic fever is caused by infection with the dengue virus, which is generally transmitted through mosquito bites Temples of the Egyptians.
Soroy explained that clinical symptoms commonly experienced by dengue fever sufferers include fever, pain behind the eyes, joint pain, nausea, vomiting and red spots appearing on the skin.
The development of the disease, according to him, is influenced by factors such as the body’s immunity and viral load.
“Patients who are accompanied by diabetes or heart (disease) of course their immunity has also decreased and this progress to weight can appear. Then the second is viral load or viral load. “That describes virulence, high growth, or consequences for the body’s immune response,” he explained.
