Understanding the Causes of Snoring and How to Treat It: Expert Insights from CNN Report

Snoring during sleep causes discomfort to the partner, and it does not represent, as some believe, a sign of deep sleep. Rather, it may be a warning sign of the presence of larger health problems that must be addressed.

According to a report by the networkCNNTo understand the causes of snoring and search for ways to treat it, you must first understand how to breathe, as Emerson Wickwire, head of the Department of Sleep Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, says that the brain sends a signal to the diaphragm as a first step that represents the breathing cycle.

She added that the air then enters the lungs before the heart pumps oxygen-rich blood to the brain and other vital organs, and the body repeats this cycle throughout the day. When we sleep and the muscles and tissues in the upper airway – the nose, sinuses and mouth – relax, the airway is smaller.

This means that during sleep, the same amount of air our body uses during the day, uses a much smaller space to move through, causing those tissues that are in a relaxed state to vibrate.

Wickwire added that it is like putting your hand in front of a very powerful fan, as it will cause noise as a result of the air hitting your hand and you will then feel vibrations. The same applies to snoring when the tissues in the upper airway vibrate, which is what we call snoring.

What is the solution?

The CNN report stated that there is no one-size-fits-all treatment or solution to get rid of snoring.

He added that in some cases the situation can be improved by making lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, exercising regularly, quitting smoking, or avoiding drinking alcoholic beverages before bed.

You can also try sleeping on your side or holding your head up, to help keep the upper airway open, but if this is ineffective, you should consult a doctor.

The report noted that 37 million Americans indicated that they face the problem of snoring on a regular basis, while many find it embarrassing to admit to the problem.

Women usually report having trouble with snoring to a lesser extent than men, making it more likely that sleep disturbances will be overlooked, although breathing problems can be encountered during pregnancy and menopause.

Wickwire continued his speech by saying: “When people sleep better, especially if they suffer from disorders in this regard and treat them, everything in life becomes better.”
