Dementia is a group of symptoms associated with the ongoing deterioration of the brain, which is why it can affect memory, behaviour, and even movement.

Although there is no cure for dementia, there are treatments and support available for those who need it, so it is essential to treat any signs of dementia as soon as they are discovered, according to the British newspaper Express.

And according to the British Alzheimer’s Foundation, some symptoms can appear at the end of the day.

A person, with a strange display known as “sunset”, can become upset or irritable, according to the British newspaper Express.

And the Foundation explains: “Sometimes you may see changes in the person’s behavior later in the afternoon or towards the end of the day, and during this time, the person may become very distressed and agitated and have hallucinations or delusions, and this may continue until the night, which makes it difficult for them to get get enough sleep.”

This is sometimes known as ‘sunset’ but is not necessarily associated with sunset or limited to the end of the day.

Sunsetting can occur at any stage of dementia but is most common during the middle and later stages.

Sunset reasons

Sunset can be caused by a number of factors.

Dementia UK says: “As the day goes on, a person with dementia becomes more tired, and this can worsen their dementia symptoms.

Hunger, thirst, and physical pain can also play a role.

“As it gets dark, the street lights come on and people settle in for the evening, these changes can make a person increasingly anxious that they’re in the wrong place, or that they’ve forgotten to do something vital during the day.”

The Alzheimer’s Association lists the following causes of sunkenness:

Fatigue, hunger, pain, or other unmet physical needs

Not enough exposure to sunlight during the day

Excessive stimulation during the day, such as in a noisy or crowded environment

Disruption of a person’s “body clock” due to brain damage

Turbulent hormone levels that vary throughout the day

Sensory impairment, such as hearing or vision loss

Fatigue in other people, which makes the person with dementia uncomfortable

Mood disorders, such as anxiety or depression

Too few caregivers to take care of the person (in a nursing home)

Side effects of prescribed medications.

What do you do if you think someone is showing signs of sundowning?

If you think someone may be showing signs of fading but they haven’t been diagnosed with dementia, you should seek medical help.

To manage the symptoms of dementia, do the following:

Use distraction techniques: go to a different room, get the person to drink, have a snack, put on some music, or go for a walk

Ask them what is the matter, listen carefully to their response and, if possible, see if you can deal with the cause of their distress

Speak in a slow and calm manner

Speak in short sentences and give simple instructions to try to avoid confusion

Hold the person’s hand or sit near them and caress their arm.
