What are those subcutaneous bumps and lumps?

A new lump or bump on your body can be a cause for concern. People sometimes see it as a harbinger of cancer, but usually it is harmless. If lumps change in size or appearance or if they become painful or red, it is best to contact a doctor.

Subcutaneous bumps can be divided into roughly five types:

Cysts: A cyst is a closed sac of tissue that contains fluid or waste. The texture varies depending on the material stuck in the pouch. A cyst can be caused by a blocked oil gland or hair follicle. Cysts can develop anywhere on the body and often disappear on their own. If a cyst becomes infected, medical treatment is needed. Dermatofibromas: Dermatofibromas are hard brown or red bumps under the skin that usually develop on exposed areas of the skin, such as the legs, arms, and back. They occur when excess cells collect in the thickest layer of the skin, the dermis. Dermatofibromas do not usually progress to cancer and there are usually no other symptoms. Swollen lymph nodes: Sometimes lymph nodes swell in response to bacterial or viral infections. They may then feel hard and painful. Swollen lymph nodes usually occur in the head, neck, armpits or groin. In most cases they disappear on their own. If not, the underlying cause – usually an infection – must be addressed.Lipomas: a lipoma is a benign tumor consisting of fatty tissue. These non-carcinogenic lumps form just under the skin and they appear pale or colorless. Lipomas usually feel soft and are easy to move. Generally do not cause symptoms. Fibroadenoma: A fibroadenoma is a benign breast tumor composed of fibrous and glandular tissue. Fibroadenomas can develop due to high estrogen levels. They can grow due to a rise in hormone levels during pregnancy and shrink during menopause. For fibroadenomas that are not painful or do not grow, no medical treatment is needed.

Which subcutaneous bumps are malignant?

In many cases, lumps disappear without treatment. It is not always possible to find out what the cause of a bump is. If you notice a bump or lump under your skin, keep an eye on it. In general, tender, mobile lumps are harmless and will likely improve with time. It’s a good idea to see a doctor if you notice:

Skin discoloration, swelling, or painPus or other fluid oozing from the bumpSwelling in the area around the bumpChanges in color, shape, and size, especially with rapid or steady growthHigh feverA lump more than 1cm in diameterHard or painless lumps that appear suddenly
