Understanding Stroke in Children: Causes, Symptoms, and Risks

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – Stroke can not only be experienced by adults or the elderly (elderly) but also children.

According to RSAB Harapan Kita pediatrician, Citra Raditha, the incidence of stroke in children is very small but still dangerous.

“Indeed, strokes can occur in children too, although the incidence is very small. It is said from research that it is around 1 to 17 children per 100 thousand per year. “It’s a little, yes, but it’s quite dangerous if it happens,” said Citra in a live Radio Sehat broadcast on the Ministry of Health’s Instagram, Wednesday (10/1/2023).

Citra explained that stroke in children is a condition where there are signs and symptoms of a nervous or neurological disorder that occurs suddenly (acute). The cause of stroke in children is a lack of oxygen supply to brain cells or local bleeding in the brain.

“Indeed, the principles of stroke are these two things, there is a lack of oxygen supply due to blockage or irregular blood flow, which we call ischemic stroke. And there are also bleeding or hemorrhagic strokes due to rupture of blood vessels.”

In other words, the trigger for stroke at all ages, including children, is the same, namely blockage or rupture of blood vessels. However, the specific causes in children are much more varied.

“The essence is the same, but the causes are very varied in children because disorders or diseases in children also vary greatly,” explained Citra.
