Repeated exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays leads to abnormal proliferation of skin cells that often appear on the hand and fingers, and the American Society for the Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) notes that “squamous cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer of the hand.”
The organization says: “Squamous cell carcinoma, a type of skin cancer, may look like a wound or infection that does not heal,” according to the British newspaper “express”.
If skin cancer is detected in the early stages, squamous cell carcinoma can be treated successfully, and if the diagnosis is delayed it can be dangerous.
Squamous cell carcinomas can appear as thick, rough, scaly patches that may crust or bleed, and the lesions are usually surrounded by sun-damaged skin that has wrinkled, discolored or lost elasticity.
Sometimes, squamous cell carcinoma looks like a wart, or an open sore that doesn’t heal completely.
The Skin Cancer Foundation adds, “Squamous cell carcinomas sometimes appear as growths that are raised at the edges with a lower area in the center that may bleed or itch.”
One of the best things you can do is consult a dermatologist when you notice anything unusual on your skin, a sore that won’t heal, or a new spot.
Plus, daily sun protection is the single most effective way to reduce your risk of skin cancer.
The NHS adds: “If you have a lot of moles or freckles, your risk of developing skin cancer is higher than average, so take extra care.”
