Understanding Russian Aggression: Freeze Conflicts, Missile Buys, and Baltic States’ Safety

First, we definitely see a trend – as soon as Russia loses on the front, it tries to freeze the conflict, because it gives them the opportunity to build up the forces to buy more missiles and train their personnel. That is why we are always very wary of any Russian attempts to freeze the conflict. The Baltic states are members of NATO. But we follow the discourse inside Russia and we know that they still have thoughts about the return of the territories, or as they call it, about the “protection of Russian-speaking people in the Baltics”. In 2008, Ukrainians thought it was just a bad joke. That they would never do that. But now we understand that we must also be very careful in this region, that we cannot relax just because you are member states. Russia is aware that the Baltic states are small. Ukraine is not so small.
