Understanding Psychogenic Cough: Neurologist Explains the Protective Reflex of the Psyche

When coughing is a protective reflex of the psyche

We are used to thinking that a cough is a clear symptom of a cold. However, this is not always the case. Sometimes the body’s reaction is psychogenic in nature. Neurologist Marina Anikina spoke about this in an interview with Sputnik radio.

If we are talking about a respiratory disease, coughing has the purpose of removing phlegm and pathogens; in the case of anxiety disorders, it is a protective reflex of the psyche.

It occurs during stress and a feeling of danger and has its own periodicity – it appears at the time of an emotional conversation or a traumatic situation. However, he is absent at night. That is, we can say that a psychogenic cough attacks only during periods of activity of the nervous system.

Such a cough is not at all harmless; it is difficult for patients to tolerate, is poorly treated with medication, can persist for a very long time (up to two years), reduces performance and spoils the voice.

To be sure of the psychogenic nature of the reflex, you need to contact a specialist, the expert believes. After all, there are sluggish bronchopulmonary diseases that occur in a similar way. If, after an X-ray and relevant tests, the doctor has concluded that the cough is caused by stress, he will give a referral to a neurologist or psychiatrist who can solve the problem.
