The German Federal Center for Nutrition said that potassium deficiency in the body is due to several reasons, including the excretion of potassium through the kidneys due to the body secreting too much aldosterone or cortisol in what is known as hyperaldosteronism (Conn’s syndrome) or hypercortisolism.
The center added that some medications can have a similar effect on potassium excretion by the kidneys. These include diuretics, glucocorticoids, and antibiotics. Kidney impairment can also lead to potassium loss.
Potassium deficiency may also be due to excessive use of laxatives, frequent vomiting or diarrhea.
Symptoms of potassium deficiency
Symptoms of potassium deficiency are:
- Heart rhythm disturbances
- muscle weakness
- Constant feeling tired and exhausted
The adult body needs 4 grams of potassium per day.
Potassium sources
The body can be supplied with potassium by eating foods rich in it, such as vegetables, fruits (carrots, tomatoes, bananas, apricots, avocados), legumes, and nuts (hazelnuts, almonds, cashews, and peanuts).
In case of severe deficiency, potassium-containing nutritional supplements can be resorted to under the supervision of a doctor.
