Understanding Polycystic Ovary Syndrome: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment Options

One in ten women, aged between 20 and 40, suffers from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. We are talking about one of the most common endocrine disorders in women. Often, the symptoms begin in the teenage years and, if it is not discovered and treated in time, the disease can lead to serious complications, such as infertility or even cancer.

Polycystic ovary syndrome represents the totality of clinical and paraclinical changes, determined by a pathological condition of the ovaries, which interferes with the normal reproductive function of a woman and has an impact on the whole body.

Until now, the exact cause could not be fully elucidated. However, several risk factors can be listed that increase a woman’s likelihood of developing this condition. Among the risk factors we can list: family history, excess insulin caused by tissue resistance to it or chronic inflammation

Before knowing that they suffer from this syndrome, women present to the doctor with menstrual cycle disorders, acne or excessive growth of body hair with a male-specific distribution on the body. There are also certain diseases favored by polycystic ovary syndrome.

“There is a greater risk of type 2 diabetes and dyslipidemias. Compared to women of the same age, women with PCOS have a higher incidence of obesity, itself being an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease and an increased risk of endometrial cancer is reported. Infertility is a common problem of women with PCOS, being the consequence of irregular menstrual cycles. Also, during pregnancy there is a higher risk of developing gestational diabetes, pregnancy-induced hypertension or premature birth.”

The treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome differs according to the age and wishes of the patients. Those who want a pregnancy will benefit from a completely different approach compared to teenage girls with irregular periods and acne.
