Understanding Plantar Fasciitis: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Participating in sportv’s “Boleragem” program last Monday, Ganso revealed the exact injury that has been hindering him in the Fluminense em 2023.

– It’s a plantar fasciitis, it was bothering me.

– I had this week to be able to recover well, to be 100%, because the way I was entering the field was not doing well either for me or for the club.

Ganso confirms that he is returning to Fluminense training in a week of preparation for the classic against Flamengo

But what is a plantar fasciitis? It is an inflammation of the fascia, a tissue that starts at the heel and extends across the sole of the foot. It affects more runners, but is also common in soccer. Depending on the pain, it’s not a problem that prevents you from playing, so much so that Ganso has come to face Atlético-MG and Sporting Cristal, from Peru, in recent weeks. However, it hinders the yield.

In 2016, Daniel Alves was still at Barcelona, in Spain, when he revealed that he had plantar fasciitis and was at risk of being out of the Selection in the Copa America:

– I’ve been in pain for six months. They are uncomfortable, but they don’t stop me from playing. I have been treated. I asked permission to be 100% to help my country. The pain is strong, but it doesn’t stop playing – he declared at the time.

Other Brazilian players who had this type of injury, for example, were: Luan at Grêmio in 2018; Gil at Corinthians in 2022; Hulk at Atlético-MG also last year; Filipe Luís at Flamengo in 2023; between others. Argentine playmaker Riquelme also suffered from the problem at Boca Juniors in 2009.

Physician Ana Paula Simões, master in orthopedics and traumatology at Santa Casa de São Paulo and member of the Brazilian Society of Sports Medicine, explained the forms of treatment, which is conservative:

– Treatment is done according to the severity of the symptoms. The ideal is to initially treat the inflammation of the fascia. Thus, the most common measures are: anti-inflammatory drugs; ice; acupuncture; massage; physiotherapy (initially with anti-inflammatory methods such as laser, ultrasound, magnetotherapy, infrared); shock waves. The recommendation is to avoid impact activities during the inflammatory phase – wrote for the website “Eu Athlete” in 2022.

Ganso has already been feeling pain in his left foot since last month, when he was vetoed against Goiás before the Fifa Date. Playing “in sacrifice”, he failed to stand out as he had been doing this season and was out of the last two games, against São Paulo and Internacional. The midfielder has not shone with the tricolor shirt since the 2-1 victory over Bragantino on June 4, when he even scored one of the goals (see video below).

At 26 min of the 1st half – goal from inside the area by Ganso do Fluminense against Bragantino

Ganso had been training normally and was undergoing treatment after the activities. But last week, the midfielder was spared from work on the field and was only in the gym recovering. He returned to participate in training on the field with the ball in the squad’s re-introduction last Tuesday. If he doesn’t feel pain again, he should return to the team in Fla-Flu next Sunday, at 4 pm (Brasília time) in Maracanã, for the 15th round of the Brazilian Championship.
