Understanding O365’s IMAP and Basic Authentication: Key Insights and Future Outlook

O365 doesn’t do IMAP yet? That should work with app passwords, right?

They did that, the only problem in the campaign area is that that option is closed by default.
There is a good reason for this, as they want everyone to switch to authentication via OAUTH2, something that Thunderbird supports. However, turning this option on is the same option that turns on Basic Authentication (“Disable SMTP AUTH” is on by default) and is therefore completely dangerous.

The protocol that Outlook uses is closed and (in America) partially patented, so you can’t just put that in an app. Microsoft should just do IMAP if they want apps to be able to connect to it (which they don’t).

EWS support is being worked on in the desktop version, then they want to continue with Graph as EWS will be EOL from 2026.
