So what exactly is monkey pox or what is internationally known as monkeypox?
About Monkey Pox
Monkeypox is a rare zoonotic disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus. Monkeypox virus belongs to the genus Orthopoxvirus in the family Poxviridae. The Orthopoxvirus genus also includes variola virus (which causes smallpox), vaccinia virus (used in the smallpox vaccine), and cowpox virus.
Monkey pox was first discovered in 1958. At that time, an outbreak of a smallpox-like disease was discovered which attacked a colony of monkeys kept for research, which is why this disease was called monkey pox or monkeypox.
The first case of monkeypox infecting humans was recorded in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Since then, cases of monkeypox have been reported to have infected people in several other Central and West African countries such as Cameroon, Central African Republic, Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Liberia, Nigeria, Republic of the Congo and Sierra Leone.

Transmission of Monkey Pox
The monkeypox virus can be transmitted when a person comes into contact with the virus from an infected animal, an infected person or material contaminated with the virus.
The virus can also cross the placenta from the pregnant mother to the fetus. Monkeypox virus can spread from animals to humans through the bite or scratch of an infected animal, when handling or processing wild game or through the use of products made from infected animals.
The virus can also spread through direct contact with bodily fluids or wounds on an infected person or with materials that have touched bodily fluids or wounds, such as clothing or linen.
