Throbbing headache, usually on one side of the head. Nausea and vomiting. Sparkles and flashes beforehand. Migraines can turn patients’ lives upside down. During an attack, they usually have little choice but to lie in bed and wait for it to pass.
One in ten Dutch people suffer from migraines, with an average of two attacks per month. It is especially common among adult women: one in three can talk about it.
Decades of research have produced a wealth of information about the condition. It is known exactly what happens in the brain during an attack (see box: What happens during an attack?).
