Hops.ID – Lyme disease is caused by a bacterium, Borrelia burgdorferi, which can be acquired if a person is bitten by an infected deer tick (also called a black-footed tick).
The first cases of Lyme disease, also called borreliosis, began in 1975 when many young people developed rheumatoid arthritis in Lyme, Connecticut, and two other nearby cities.
The researchers found that the bite of an infected deer tick was responsible for an outbreak of arthritis, which is now known as Lyme disease.
