Understanding Lung Cancer: Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment Options – Republika.co.id

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — The passing of actress Kiki Fatmala has left deep sorrow in the Indonesian entertainment industry. The legendary actress had to fight back lung cancer for two years before ending his life at the age of 56 years.

Lung cancer is the type of cancer that causes the most deaths in the world, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). About 85 percent of all lung cases are triggered by smoking.

“Lung cancer is often only diagnosed at an advanced stage, when treatment options are limited,” explained WHO, as quoted by Republika.co.id on Friday (1/12/2023).

According to researchers Peter M Ellis and Rachel Vandermeer in the Journal of Thoracic Disease, there are only around 20-30 percent lung cancer patients who come in a condition that can be given surgical therapy and are still in the early stages. Most lung cancer patients generally come to the doctor in stage III or metastatic conditions (cancer cells have spread to other organs).

“The average time from the appearance of the first symptoms to the start of therapy is around six months,” said Ellis and Vandermeer, as quoted from the official website of the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI).

Ellis and Vandermeer revealed that one of the factors that makes lung cancer often diagnosed late is the symptoms. Both revealed that the symptoms of lung cancer are similar to several other chronic respiratory diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

WHO also expressed the same thing. According to WHO, the symptoms of lung cancer in the early stages are relatively mild and are often considered symptoms of other respiratory diseases.

The following are some of the most common symptoms of lung cancer.

A cough that doesn’t go away

Chest pain

Hard to breathe

Coughing blood

Tired

Unexplained weight loss

Recurring lung infections

Treatment therapy for lung cancer will depend greatly on the type of lung cancer the patient has, how severe the condition is, the level of spread, and the patient’s own medical history. However, the sooner lung cancer is diagnosed and treated, the better the treatment results the patient will experience.

In general, WHO revealed that there are five therapeutic modalities that can be given to lung cancer patients. The treatment modalities are surgery, radiotherapy (radiation), chemotherapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy.

Surgery is often performed…
