Understanding Lordosis, Kyphosis, and Scoliosis: Symptoms and Differences

KOMPAS.com – Lordosis, kyphosis, and scoliosis are conditions where the spine curves abnormally.

Quoting Difference Between, the human spine basically has a natural curve.

However, lordosis, kyphosis and scoliosis are types of abnormal curvature of the spine that affect a person’s natural posture.

These three conditions can also cause sufferers to experience pain and discomfort in various parts of the body.

Each has distinctive symptoms that distinguish the abnormal curvature of the three.

This article will briefly review the differences between lordosis, kyphosis and scoliosis so you can be aware of the symptoms.

What is lordosis?

Quoting the book “Textbook of the Musculoskeletal System” (2021) by Liss Dyah Dewi Arini, et al, lordosis is a condition in which the lower (lumbar) spine curves excessively inward.

Under normal conditions, everyone’s spine is slightly curved in the neck, upper back, and lower back.

This serves to assist the body in supporting the head, aligning the head with the pelvis, maintaining body structure, and helping to move and bend easily.

The most common symptom of lordosis is muscle pain. This is because the spine can pull the muscles in different directions and cause the muscles to become tense.

In addition, other symptoms of lordosis include the following:

Restricted movement around the neck or lower back Buttocks appear more prominent Body feels weak Numbness Tingling Less able to control bowel movements and urination.

What is kyphosis?

Kyphosis is a spinal disorder in which the upper back is excessively arched or hunched over.

Everyone has a spine that is curved in the range of 25 to 45 degrees.

But in people with kyphosis, the curvature of the spine can reach 50 degrees or more.

In cases of mild kyphosis, it generally causes few problems and doesn’t need to be treated.

But in severe cases, kyphosis can cause pain and breathing problems. Thus, it requires medical assistance with surgical procedures.

Common symptoms of kyphosis include:

Right and left shoulder heights are different Height or position of the shoulder blades is different Head looks more forward than the rest of the body Abnormal looking height of the upper back Pain and stiffness in the back

What is scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a condition where the spine is curved laterally from the midline.

Scoliosis is a deformity of the spine due to lateral deviation of the spine.

The curvature of the spine with scoliosis usually forms an “S” or “C” shape. The degree of curvature of each patient can be different.

The degree of curvature determines the number of displaced ribs.

At a sufficiently large degree of rotation of the arch, typical symptoms of scoliosis include pressure that causes interference with internal organs, such as the lungs and heart.

Quoted from Difference Between, other symptoms of scoliosis include:

Pain in the back, shoulders, neck, ribs and buttocks Respiratory and heart problems Constipation Limited body movement Slow nerve action Uneven posture Calcium deposits in cartilage plates

So, the main difference between lordosis, kyphosis and scoliosis is the shape of the curvature.

Lordosis is excessive inward curvature, kyphosis is excessive outward curvature. Meanwhile, scoliosis is an abnormal sideways curvature of the thoracic, lumbar and thoracolumbal spine.
