Kidney stones or nephrolithiasis, is a condition where dense, hard material similar to stones forms in the kidneys.
The stones come from salts and minerals in the kidneys. This disease can arise along the urinary tract.
The appearance of kidney stones is caused by waste in the blood forming crystals that accumulate in the kidneys.
Chemicals that can form stones and block kidney channels are oxalic acid and calcium.
As time goes by, these two substances become harder and harder, resembling stone. The symptoms that are often encountered are as follows.
Pain when urinating
Pain when urinating is one of the symptoms that is often found when experiencing kidney stones. This condition can occur when kidney stones are in the ureters, namely the pipes from the kidneys to the bladder, precisely at the border before entering the bladder.
However, pain when urinating does not always result in kidney stones. Urinary tract infections can also trigger pain when urinating.
Frequent urination
Frequent urination even though you don’t drink much can also be a common symptom of kidney stones.
In fact, you can’t bear to urinate. This condition generally occurs when kidney stones begin to move down the urinary tract.
Urine is cloudy and foul-smelling
Urine that is cloudy or has a foul smell can also be a common symptom of kidney stones.
Cloudy urine can be caused by pus or high levels of white blood cells in the urine. Meanwhile, unpleasant odors in urine can be triggered by bacteria.
Urine contains blood
Another symptom of kidney stones is hematuria. This condition can occur when kidney stones irritate the soft tissue that lines the urinary tract, including the ureters.
Blood in the urine can be pink, red, or brown.
However, sometimes the blood that comes out is very little (microhematuria), so it can only be seen using a microscope when a urine lab test is carried out.
Urinate a little
Urinating a little or passing urine is one of the symptoms of kidney stones.
These symptoms can occur if a kidney stone gets stuck in the ureter and blocks the flow of urine, so that little urine reaches the bladder.
If the blockage in the urinary tract is severe, seek medical help immediately.
Nausea and vomiting
The nerves in the kidneys and digestive tract are connected to each other.
Kidney stones can trigger digestive nerve disorders, causing nausea and vomiting.
Nausea and vomiting are also part of the body’s reaction to severe pain.
Fever
Although fever can also be a sign of other diseases, this condition can also be a symptom of kidney stones.
Fever is generally experienced when the kidney stones suffered have caused serious complications, requiring emergency medical treatment.
