Jakarta –
Kidney stones, or what is also called nephrolithiasis, is a condition caused by the formation of solid deposits in the kidneys. Usually, these deposits come from chemicals in the urine.
Kidney stones can occur along the urinary tract, such as the ureters, urethra and bladder. Kidney stones can vary in size, from as small as a grain of sand to as big as a golf ball.
When they are still in the early stages, the characteristics of kidney stones are often not detected, especially if the size of the kidney stones is very small. However, as time goes by, the size of kidney stones can increase in size until they eventually block the flow of urine. The movement of kidney stones along the urinary tract can also cause pain.
Therefore, it is important to know the characteristics of kidney stones from an early age in order to take preventive measures, so that the condition does not get worse and cause complications.
Characteristics of Kidney Stones
1. Renal Colic
The most typical characteristic of kidney stones is renal colic, which is a sharp, stabbing pain that occurs on one side of the body or back. Kidney stones can block the urinary tract. When kidney stones get stuck in the urinary tract, this can block the flow of urine and cause swelling of the kidneys and cause the ureters to spasm. This is what then triggers severe pain in the side of the body, back, or under the ribs.
2. Nausea and vomiting
Symptoms of kidney stones can also include nausea and vomiting. These symptoms appear due to the same nerve connection between the kidneys and the digestive tract. As a result, kidney stones can also cause stomach pain. Nausea and vomiting are the body’s ways of responding to pain.
3. Blood in the urine
Very small kidney stones can usually be passed easily in the urine without significant symptoms. But kidney stones that are large enough can easily get stuck in the kidney or urinary tract.
A stuck kidney stone can cause damage to the cells in the lining of the urinary tract, which then causes injury and allows blood to enter the urine.
4. Pain when urinating
People with kidney stones can also experience pain when urinating. Kidney stone deposits have a hard and sharp structure, so that when they move along the urinary tract they can cause pain. Kidney stones stuck in the urinary tract can also cause pain when urinating.
5. Frequent urination
Apart from causing pain, kidney stones can also make sufferers urinate frequently. When kidney stones move or become blocked in the lower urinary tract, such as the urethra, they can cause the urge to urinate. Usually, this feeling does not disappear even after urinating. This is what causes kidney stone sufferers to urinate frequently in small volumes.
6. Urine smells and foams
Smelly or foamy urine is one of the characteristics of kidney stones that is quite easy to recognize. The foam or unpleasant aroma is caused by bacterial infection or pus originating from the urinary tract.
As previously explained, the movement of kidney stones can cause injury to the urinary tract. If the wound becomes infected, it can cause pus which then mixes with urine excreted from the body.
