Understanding Inclusion and Living with Disabilities: A Week of Exploration at Julius-Leber-School in Breisach

How does it feel to live with a disability? That’s what the social week of the Julius-Leber-School on inclusion in Breisach was all about.

In this school year, the two seventh graders of the Julius-Leber-School again held the social week on the subject of “making inclusion and disability tangible”. This emerges from a press release. In cooperation with Julia Thamm, the municipal representative for the disabled of the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald, the students went through a “dementia course” in small groups, tested with the help of promotional materials how blind and deaf people can communicate, and much more. With Florian Kiuppis, coach for the “Baskin” sport, the students were given an active insight into how inclusive basketball games work.

A highlight for the students was the social space exploration in Breisach with wheelchairs. They were accompanied by Christian Gröne, inclusion mediator of the city of Breisach, and Esther Weber, representative of the association “Disabled help non-disabled”. With spray chalk, the students were able to clearly identify barriers in the city.

“Wheelchair users don’t have it easy, but you can still reach everything,” said one of the students. Another said: “I didn’t realize how many disabilities aren’t present at birth.” Another student became enthusiastic about learning his name in sign language.

The walkers and wheelchairs were borrowed free of charge from the nursing home of the Evangelische Stadtmission Freiburg in Breisach and the Schaub medical supply store. The campaign materials were made available by the Christoffel Mission for the Blind and the advice center for older people and their relatives in Bötzingen.
