What is HPV?
HPV stands for Human Papillomavirus. The virus can cause cervical cancer and genital warts. It can also cause cancer of the penis, anus, labia, vagina, and mouth and throat. You get HPV through sexual activity. Almost everyone gets an HPV infection at some point, men and women.
Usually the immune system clears the virus again. This does not happen in 10 to 20 percent of cases. It is especially common among young women. But men also get the virus, which is why they now also receive an invitation for a vaccination. Children and young people between the ages of 10 and 18 can also receive a free vaccination against HPV.
