A virus is not limited to national borders or continents. There are approximately 39 million people living with HIV worldwide. HIV is therefore not a problem that only affects Africa.
What is true is that HIV prevalence is higher in Africa – mainly in Southern and Eastern Africa. Countries such as Lesotho, South Africa and Botswana in particular have a high percentage.
“You cannot actually isolate HIV from the quality of healthcare,” says gynecologist Marleen Temmerman, who led a research project on HIV in Kenya. “But compulsory education for boys and girls can help. (…) Countries with a clear policy make the difference.”
There is also UN-AIDS, the UN agency dedicated to combating HIV/AIDS. They have launched a 95-95-95 target, to eliminate AIDS as a global health threat by 2030. 95% of people living with HIV should know their status by then, 95% of people living with HIV should be on treatment, and 95% should be a non- must have detectable HIV status. (you can read more about this undetectable status in misunderstanding 5)
