Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – South Koreans report a spike in cases of infection with Herpes Zoster (shingles). The Korea Herald cites data from the National Health Insurance Corporation, as many as 722,257 people in South Korea were infected with Herpes Zoster, up 2.4% from the previous 705,661 in 2017.

Total disease-related medical costs incurred for individuals, families and the Korean government amounted to 166.1 billion won ($125 million) related to the virus in 2021, an increase of 11.9 percent from 2017.

People most likely to be infected with herpes zoster are those over 50 years of age. Across all age groups, people in their 60s made up the largest share of the total number of shingles patients at 23.8%, followed by those in their 50s with 22.4%, and those in their 40s with 15.9 % in 2021.

“Anyone who has had chickenpox can get shingles, but the risk of getting shingles increases with age. Most people get shingles in their 50s or older,” said Kang Yeon-seung, a professor of anesthesiology at Ilsan Hospital. , a facility managed by the National Health Insurance Corporation, quoted on Sunday (23/4/2023).

“Since anyone with a weakened immune system has an increased risk of developing shingles, it is important to exercise regularly. Regular exercise can boost a person’s immune system.”

Quoting the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, this herpes virus can be detected because it has characteristics when it attacks the sufferer.

The first sign is a painful rash that develops on one side of the face or body. The rash consists of blisters that usually crust over in 7 to 10 days and disappear completely in 2 to 4 weeks.

Before the rash appears, people often experience pain, itching, or tingling in the area that will become infected. This may occur several days before the rash appears.

Usually the rash occurs in a line around the left or right side of the body. In other cases, the rash occurs on one side of the face.

Herpes zoster on the face can affect the eyes and cause blindness. In rare cases (usually in people with weakened immune systems), the rash may be more widespread over the body and look similar to the chickenpox rash.

The following are other symptoms of shingles:

• Fever

• Headache

• Chills

• Stomach ache
