Herpes is an infection caused by HSV (herpes simplex virus). This virus affects the external genitalia, anal area, mucosal surfaces, and skin in other parts of the body.

When HSV is present on the skin surface of an infected person, it can easily be passed to other people through the moist skin lining the mouth, anus, and genitals. This virus can also be spread to other individuals through other areas of the skin, as well as the eyes.

A person who catches herpes will develop blisters around the mouth, genitals or rectum. Herpes infection on the face or mouth is known as oral herpes or cold sores. Oral herpes can be spread through something as simple as a kiss.
