Understanding Heart Attack Symptoms and Signs: Expert Explanation and Myths

Jakarta

Heart attacks are often seen as a terrible scourge because they come suddenly without any ‘sign’ of certain symptoms first. What’s more, this disease actually not only attacks elderly people, but can also attack young people.

Chair of the Indonesian Association of Internal Medicine Specialists (PAPDI) Dr Dr Sally Aman Nasution, SpPD-KKV, FINASIM, FACP, explained that there are actually a number of signs of a heart attack. But often, these symptoms are not understood as signs of a heart attack. As a result, patients cannot get proper treatment.

One of the symptoms that often appears is pain in the pit of the stomach. In many cases, these symptoms are thought to be ‘just’ GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease).

“It depends on which part of the coronary artery is affected. If it is on the left, the symptoms that appear spread to the left arm, shoulder, back, sometimes jaw,” explained Dr Sally in a press conference, Tuesday (28/11/2023).

“But if the right blood vessel is affected, the symptoms are often like stomach ulcers, indeed in the pit of the stomach, not in the back or arms, but in the pit of the stomach,” he added.

According to Dr. Sally, heartburn caused by stomach acid disease generally appears due to certain intake or eating patterns. For example, heartburn occurs after someone eats late or eats too much.

Furthermore, Dr Sally explained several symptoms and signs of a heart attack in the form of:

Chest painHeadacheNauseaCold sweatPain from the jaw to the shoulders, armsBack painSometimes accompanied by shortness of breath
