Understanding Funeral Insurance Contracts and How Agira Can Help You Verify Them

The Association for Insurance Risk Information Management (Agira) can help you find out if a contract has already been taken out.

A person’s funeral insurance policy is taken out during their lifetime and takes effect upon their death. This contract aims to finance the costs of his burial. It defines the amount allocated to the funeral and names a beneficiary to receive the capital.

Anyone can establish their contract, for themselves, but also for their loved ones in order to ensure the financing of a funeral. The beneficiary can be either a family member or the funeral director. Any natural or legal person may request by any means to be informed of the existence of a funeral insurance contract that a deceased person has taken out and of which they are the (or one of the) beneficiary(ies).

To verify the existence or not of a funeral insurance contract, it is possible to contact the Association for Insurance Risk Information Management (Agira).

For businesses, individuals, public authorities

A professional insurance body, Agira implements regulatory, professional and ethical systems at the service of the profession. Agira systems are intended either for insurance companies, the public or public authorities.

Agira brings together insurance companies operating on the French market and professional organizations operating in the sector. Mandated by the French Federation of Insurers, it lists all funeral contracts already taken out.

How to do ?

In order to enter Agira for your contract search, you must complete an online form (Funeral). You can only question Agira regarding a funeral insurance contract when the subscriber has died. The request must include, among other things, a copy of the death certificate, proof of payment for the funeral of the deceased person.

Once sent, Agira checks the file and sends a confirmation message to the applicant if the file is complete or a request for additional information.

The validated request is then sent by Agira to the insurers. They then have three days to provide a response. If the file is sent more than three months after the death of the beneficiary, it will take one month for Agira to respond.

Good to know

  • Agira does not have any information on the follow-up given to the referrals it has sent.
  • Agira’s role is solely to transmit research requests to insurance organizations. She will therefore not be able to inform you about the status of your request.
