Hops.ID – Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) is a contagious virus that causes respiratory infections, mostly occurring in children and adolescents.
Usually, people with enterovirus D68 experience mild cold-like symptoms.
However, some other people who get enterovirus D68 develop life-threatening respiratory problems.

A small number of children with enterovirus D68 also have a nervous system disorder called acute flaccid myelitis (AFM).
AFM disorders cause extreme muscle weakness. Rarely does a child with AFM develop permanent paralysis.
What are enteroviruses?
Enteroviruses are a group of viruses that cause various types of infectious infections. In total, there are more than 300 types of enteroviruses.

EV-D68 is a subtype of enterovirus that affects the respiratory system.
Health care providers place EV-D68 in the non-polio enterovirus category. There are more than 100 non-polio enteroviruses.
Like the virus that causes polio, some of these enteroviruses affect the nervous system. They cause a variety of health problems, including:
- AFM
- Hand, foot and mouth disease
- Meningitis and encephalitis
