Understanding Edema: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment for Swollen Hands and Fingers

Most of the time, people who have swollen and painful hands, fingers and feet feel a heightened state of discomfort. This type of clinical manifestation, also known as edema, can occur in any area of the body. However, it most often manifests itself in the fingers, hands, arms, ankles and feet.

Do you feel a sharp pain and you don’t know why? Edema usually occurs when the body retains fluids, but there are other factors that can trigger these conditions, including excessive heat, vigorous exercise, and certain medical conditions. In some cases, however, swollen fingers or hands are not a cause for concern, but in other situations, treatment of the underlying disease may be necessary. It should also be noted that the body retains fluids, especially if the diet is rich in salt, a reaction necessary for the body to dilute the increased concentration of this mineral. Furthermore, water retention can lead to temporary swelling of the hands and fingers, but it disappears spontaneously within a few hours or a maximum of two days, especially if salt intake is reduced. This is the reason why doctors recommend maintaining a balanced diet with a moderate to low salt intake, especially in conditions of an associated disease such as high blood pressure.

According to Dr. Daniela Stan, exercise and strain can also lead to swollen fingers. This happens because vital organs need more blood during intense activity, and blood flow is directed from the extremities to the heart, lungs and muscles. As a natural result, the hands receive less blood, the vessels dilate in an effort to increase the flow, which can cause edema. Also, with prolonged exercise, blood flow increases to the skin to dissipate heat and cool the body, a process that also contributes to the swelling of the fingers, but the edema will subside shortly after the workout is over.

At the same time, arthritis is a disease that can occur in any joint, small or large, inflammatory arthritis can be of infectious (tuberculosis, arthritis with different germs) and non-infectious (rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, spondylatritis) causes.

Rheumatoid arthritis, also known as rheumatoid polyarthritis, causes inflammation of the joints, causing pain and stiffness. “In this disease, the small joints of the hands and feet are usually affected, having a symmetrical and additive character (that is, the inflammation occurs in one joint, and then other joints are symmetrically affected). Symptoms of arthritis include: dull or burning pain in the affected joints; pain after overexertion; morning pains and a stiffness in the small joints of the hands, which improve after a few minutes after waking up; swelling in the joints, with a thickened-looking hand, etc.,” explained the doctor.

Also, peripheral neuropathy is a condition that causes numbness, pain, and weakness in the hands and feet, and it occurs when the peripheral nerves are damaged by causes such as diabetes, traumatic injuries, infections, and metabolic problems. Common symptoms of peripheral neuropathy include: numbness, pins and needles, or tingling in the feet or hands; swelling of the hands; pain of increased intensity; extreme sensitivity; muscle weakness or paralysis; lack of coordination. Given the wide variety of causes that can lead to swelling of the hands and fingers, it is important to eliminate risk factors that may contribute to these clinical manifestations. As a result, following a hygienic-dietary regime adapted to each patient depending on the associated diseases, avoiding smoking, respectively prompt and correct treatment of hypertension, nephrotic syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, can contribute to avoiding or reducing episodes.
