Understanding Different Types of Geoengineering Techniques for Climate Change Mitigation

Geoengineering is the deliberate, large-scale intervention of the Earth’s natural systems to combat climate change.

There are various types of geoengineering techniques, but in general, geoengineering can be grouped into two categories:

Solar Radiation Management techniques aim to reflect a small portion of the Sun’s energy back into space, counteracting temperature increases caused by increased levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere that absorb energy and raise temperatures. Some proposed techniques include:

– Improved Albedo. Increases the reflective power of clouds or the ground surface so that more of the sun’s heat is reflected back into space.

– Space reflector. Blocks a small portion of sunlight before it reaches the earth.

– Stratospheric aerosol. Injects small, reflective particles into the upper atmosphere to reflect some of the sun’s rays before they reach the Earth’s surface.
