Understanding Diabetes Mellitus (DM) in Children: Type 1 vs Type 2, Symptoms, and Detection

WARTAKOTALIVE.COM, JAKARTA – Diabetes Mellitus (DM) or diabetes is a disease that not only affects the elderly, but also those who are young. This condition can even affect children.

DM itself is divided into two types, namely Type 1 DM occurs when the body’s immune system does not recognize the cells in the pancreas that make insulin and attacks and destroys these cells. As a result, the body is unable to produce enough insulin.

Then Type 2 DM is caused by increased blood sugar levels due to unhealthy lifestyle patterns, such as obesity.

Pediatrician and Consultant Endocrinologist dr. Frida Soesanti, Sp.A (K) said, cases of type 1 DM in children are more common than Type 2 DM.

“90 percent of type 1 DM occurs in children. People with Type 1 DM need insulin for life, because their pancreas cannot produce insulin. If we don’t give insulin, it will have ramifications everywhere, kidney failure and heart failure can occur due to high blood sugar levels. ,” said dr. Frida to Wartakotalive.com, some time ago.

According to this woman who graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia, DM can occur because she doesn’t produce insulin or if she has a lot of insulin but can’t work properly.

“Those with type 2 DM have a lot of insulin but can’t work properly,” said dr. Frida.

Detection way

He explained, to find out how to detect the occurrence of DM both Type 1 and Type 2 in children, the method is the same as the characteristics of DM in adults, namely frequent urination and urine that is easily surrounded by ants.

“Surely he will urinate a lot, often go back and forth to the bathroom, especially at night, even if his urine is not flushed properly it can be tingled,” said dr. Frida.

Parents also need to be vigilant if suddenly their child often pees in the bed, even though their child has not wet the bed in a long time. Then the child’s weight dropped dramatically.

However, according to dr. Frida, many parents think that a child’s frequent urination is a normal thing, and they also think that the child’s weight loss is just malnutrition, even though that is actually a symptom of DM in children.

Especially if the child has experienced shortness of breath, he must be taken to the hospital immediately.

“Most of the children come to the doctor in an emergency condition called diabetic ketoacidosis, they come to the doctor in a state of shortness of breath, can be unconscious and have to be admitted to the ICU,” he added.
