Hops.ID – Cynophobia is an extreme fear of dogs, both pictures of dogs and real dogs.
The term cynophobia comes from the Greek word “cyno” which means dog.
Children and adults with cynophobia always try very hard to avoid dogs.

They may experience severe anxiety or panic attacks when they hear dogs barking, watch movies about dogs, or go to places where dogs might be.
In severe cases, people with this disorder may even avoid friends or stay indoors for fear of encountering dogs.
Who is at risk for cynophobia?
This disorder generally affects children, but people of any age can develop cynophobia.

Cynophobia often occurs in children with autism. What’s more, they will be more at risk for developing cynophobia if they have:
- Depression
- Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)
- History of mental illness, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic attacks, or panic disorder
- Other phobias or a history of phobias in the family
- Substance abuse disorder
People who have had frightening experiences with dogs are also more likely to develop this phobia.
