Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is one of the main causes of death in Indonesia. This disease generally occurs due to narrowing of the coronary arteries due to atherosclerotic plaques that have accumulated (cholesterol, connective tissue and other substances).
Cardiology and Vascular Specialist Doctor from Heartology Denio A. Ridjab, Sp.JP (K) said that if there are symptoms of a heart attack, no matter how mild they are, they should not be underestimated.
Proper management of coronary heart disease can prevent further complications, including heart rhythm disturbances or arrhythmias, heart failure, cardiogenic shock, and cardiac arrest which can lead to death.
“Currently Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) or Angioplasty is available for fast and accurate CHD treatment, which is an intervention to restore blood flow to the heart by overcoming blockages or narrowing of the coronary arteries,” said dr. Denio, Thursday (6/7/2023).
He explained, coronary artery blockages will be stretched using a special balloon catheter for coronary arteries and a ring/stent installation, which is inserted through a blood vessel in the arm or groin to the heart without a surgical process.
Furthermore, he said one of the latest tools that can currently be used to help diagnose and support PCI or Coronary Angiography is IVUS (IntraVascular Ultrasound).
This examination provides a more accurate picture of the heart’s blood vessels such as diameter, length, degree and type of plaque or blockage in these blood vessels. The use of IVUS during PCI provides accuracy in selecting intervention strategies so that stent placement will provide optimal results for the patient.
Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) can be done by inserting an ultrasound transducer (like a camera) through a guidewire into a blood vessel, which will display detailed images inside the blood vessel.
The several advantages of IVUS technology are showing the presence and severity of atherosclerotic plaques (narrowing) in blood vessels, providing information about what forms plaques in blood vessels, detecting restenosis. As well as helping to place stents more accurately and reduce the risk of re-blockage of stents in arteries and veins.
“By using IVUS, doctors can make a more comprehensive assessment of the condition of blood vessels, the severity of CHD and reduce the possible risk of complications,” he said.
