Understanding Chronic Kidney Disease: Symptoms, Prevention, and Early Detection

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The kidneys perform many tasks to keep the body in balance, including removing natural waste and extra water from the body, helping to make red blood cells, balancing levels of important minerals in the body, helping to maintain blood pressure, and keeping bones healthy.

According to information published on the website of the Indonesian Ministry of Health, chronic kidney failure occurs when damage to the structure and/or function of the kidneys lasts for three months or more. Problems that arise due to sudden changes in kidney function, less than three months, are called acute kidney disorders.

Symptoms of chronic kidney failure vary, including complaints of nausea, vomiting, headaches, feeling tired easily, decreased appetite, itchy skin, changes in the amount and frequency of urination, swelling of the legs and eyelids in the morning, an increasingly enlarged stomach. , shortness of breath, convulsions, and decreased consciousness.

Consultant Nephrologist from Yashoda Hospital Hyderabad Sashi Kiran A said that chronic kidney disease is a progressive condition, showing no obvious symptoms until the disease has progressed significantly.

“Even if symptoms appear, patients may not realize that it is due to chronic kidney disease. Therefore, symptoms in the early stages are often unnoticed by most patients. However, it is important to know that if diagnosed early, progression can be noticed,” he said as quoted by the Hindustan Times on Friday (8/3).

He conveyed several early symptoms of kidney problems that need to be watched out for, such as losing interest in eating and becoming nauseous if you force yourself to consume food too early. This condition causes weight loss over time.

Other early symptoms include swelling of the legs after walking for several hours or swollen eyes in the morning, getting tired easily, and urinating more frequently at night making it difficult to sleep and feeling sleepy in the morning.

Sashi also said that people with kidney problems may find it difficult to focus on studies or work.

According to him, most people with kidney problems have high blood pressure or experience increased blood pressure.

Sashi emphasizes that such symptoms should not be ignored as early detection of chronic kidney disease can help reduce the chances of its development significantly.

The Indonesian Ministry of Health said that chronic kidney disease can be prevented by carrying out regular health checks, avoiding cigarette smoke, diligently doing physical activity, consuming a balanced diet, getting enough rest, and managing stress.
