Understanding Bruce Willis’ Frontotemporal Dementia Diagnosis and Its Impact on His Family

“Just knowing what’s going on with Bruce makes it a little bit easier,” she added. Of how they explained the situation to daughters Mabel and Evelyn, she said: “We are a very honest and open family. And, you know, the most important thing was that we could say what the disease is, explain what it is, because when you know what the disease is from a medical point of view, it all becomes understandable.”

“So it was important that we let them know what it is because, you know, I don’t want their father’s diagnosis or any kind of dementia to be stigmatized or shameful,” added Hemming Willis.

She also said something positive. “He’s like the gift that keeps on giving,” she said of her husband. “Love, patience, endurance, so much.”

“Bruce would really want us to be happy with what is. He would really want that for me and our family,” she said.

In February of this year, the Willis family announced that Bruce had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia after he retired from acting in March 2022 due to a speech disorder called aphasia.

“Since we announced Bruce’s aphasia diagnosis in the spring of 2022, his condition has progressed,” the Willis family said in a statement at the time. “Unfortunately, communication problems are only one of the symptoms of the illness that Bruce is dealing with. Although it is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis.”
