Understanding BMI: What You Need to Know for a Healthy Weight

BMI?

The Body Mass Index (BMI) expresses the ratio between your weight and your height. You calculate your BMI with this formula: weight (in kg) / (height (in meters) x height). For someone who is 1.8 meters tall and weighs 70 kg, this is: 70/(1.8 x 1.8) = 21.6.

A BMI between 18.5 and 25 represents a healthy weight. Between 25 and 30 you are overweight, from 30 you are obese. A BMI lower than 18.5 represents underweight.

Growth curves are used for children and young people and there are adapted BMI tables. More information via Flemish Institute for Healthy Living.

BMI is an indicator of an unhealthy weight, but there are other indicators, such as waist circumference, body composition, fitness and diet.
