Understanding Atomic Mass: The Importance of Relative Atomic Mass (Ar)

Atoms are very small particles and cannot be weighed before grouping them into types. Anything?

GridKids.id – In the Learn from Home (BDR) article this time, I will invite you to discuss atomic mass.

In the science material book for Class 10 SMA Merdeka Curriculum, published by the Ministry of Education and Culture, p. 90-91 deals with relative atomic mass and relative molecular mass.

Atoms are very small so we can’t weigh an atom.

Even so, we can determine the atomic mass of an element by comparing it with the atoms of other elements.

Therefore we need an element that can be used as a comparison.

Thus the atomic mass of an element has the term relative atomic mass which is given the notation Ar.

A. Massa Atom Relatif (Ar)

The relative atomic mass is the average atomic mass of the element to 1/12 the mass of the C atom with atomic number 12.

So, Ar is a comparison in the form of a mathematical equation written as follows.

Ar = the average atomic mass of element X per 1/2 the atomic mass of element C-12
