Jakarta –
Asteroids are one of the celestial bodies in the solar system. Asteroids are large, irregularly shaped rocks. Until now, it is known that the number of asteroids is very large.
So, what are some examples of asteroids and how can asteroids be discovered? Come on, let’s look at the explanation
Understanding Asteroids
Quoted from the Yogyakarta State University website, Asteroids are celestial bodies in the form of small fragments. Asteroids move around the sun.
These fragments are in the form of irregularly shaped stones. Asteroids can be referred to as minor planets or planetoids. It is estimated by astronomers that there are millions of asteroids in space.
Quoted from the NASA website, to date there are 1,312,989 known asteroids. The asteroid creates a wide orbital plane between Mars and Jupiter. Astronomers call it the asteroid belt.
History of Asteroid Discovery
The discovery of asteroids began when astronomers saw a flaw in Bode’s Law. Bode’s law is a law for estimating the relative distance between planets and the Sun.
However, Bode’s Law cannot be applied to Neptune and Pluto. Before discovering Neptune and Pluto, Bode’s law was adhered to by astronomers. Bode’s law also cannot explain the distance between Mars and Jupiter.
On January 1, 1801, an astronomer named Giuseppi Piazzi announced that he had discovered an object between Mars and Jupiter. Piazzi thought that the object was a comet.
Hearing this, Bode concluded that this object was what astronomers were looking for. This discovery was continued by Karl Friedrich Gauss, a German mathematician.
Gauss succeeded in estimating the plane of the planet’s orbit. The planet was named Ceres, after the Roman goddess of plants. After that, astronomers discovered other planets. Starting from Pallas (1802), Juno (1804), to Vesta (1807).
Astronomers realized that the planets they discovered were too small to be called planets. The celestial bodies they discovered are more accurately called asteroids, small planets, or planetoids.
Types of Asteroids
Quoted from the Astronomy Source site, there are several types of asteroids that you must know:
1. Type C (Chondrite)
C-type asteroids are the most common asteroids. This asteroid may consist of clay and silicate rock. This type is dark in color and is one of the oldest objects in the solar system.
2. Tipe S (Stony)
Type S consists of nickel iron and silicate materials. Usually, this type is bigger than other types. Its diameter is about 330 km.
3. Tipe M (Metallic)
M-type asteroids are usually found around the middle of the asteroid belt. Most of this type of asteroid consists of nickel iron. Some also contain small amounts of stone.
Quoted from the FTTM ITB website, there are asteroids that do not follow the pattern above. This asteroid is classified as a U-type asteroid (unclassified). An example is Vesta, which has an albedo of 40% and its spectrum is dominated by pyroxene and feldspar.
Example of asteroids
Here are some examples of asteroids:
1. Ceres
Type: CDiameter: 1,032 km.
2. Pallas
3. Vesta
4. Hygeia
5. 704 Interamnia
6. 511 David
7. 65 Cybele
8. 52 Europa
9. 451 Patient
10. 15 Eunomia
That was the explanation about asteroids. Hopefully this is useful and happy learning detikers!
