Understanding Aplastic Anemia: Causes, Symptoms, and Diagnosis

Jakarta

Some time ago Babe Cabita opened up about her health condition. He admitted that he had been hospitalized for several weeks. In fact, he was in critical condition because of the aplastic anemia he was suffering from.

Babe said that doctors initially saw signs of leukemia in her. However, after carrying out further examination with a spinal cord examination, it was revealed that he actually had aplastic anemia.

“Aplastic anemia is actually a spinal cord disorder where it is unable to make blood cells. Usually all the blood cells are red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets in sufficient quantities,” said internal medicine specialist Dr. Ronald Alexander Hukom, SpPD -KHOM when met by detikcom in South Jakarta, Friday (15/9/2023).

Dr. Ronald explained that there are several risk factors that can cause someone to experience aplastic anemia. One of them is exposure to chemicals.

“There can be various triggers for aplastic anemia. For example, it could be due to exposure to chemicals, possibly because there are risk factors, and then there is damage because of chemicals or maybe medicines that damage the bone marrow,” he said.

“Or age could also be a risk factor, so at some point the body may experience a decline in function, including the spinal cord,” he continued.

Furthermore, he also revealed several symptoms that arise from aplastic anemia. One of them is that aplastic anemia can cause low hemoglobin which can trigger dizziness and paleness.

“Apart from that, if the platelets are low, you might see bruises, bleeding or nosebleeds. If the leukocytes are low, it will be easier to get infected. If the leukocytes are very low, they can cause fever and any kind of infection,” he said.

Regarding Babe’s initial suspicion of leukemia, Dr. Ronald said that aplastic anemia had symptoms similar to leukemia. Therefore, a spinal cord examination must be carried out.

“The difference is that if you have leukemia, you can find leukemia cells in large numbers in the spinal cord. It’s a surprise that if you have aplastic anemia you won’t find the leukemia cells. But when you check it, the ability to make blood cells has really decreased,” he concluded.
