Attack heart considered to happen suddenly without warning. In fact, if you look closely, the body is already giving signals, including angina.

World Heart Day is celebrated every year to raise awareness of the importance of protecting the heart. WHO notes that cardiovascular disease is the highest cause of death in the world with an estimated 17.9 million deaths per year.

Erta Priadi Wirawijaya, a heart and blood vessel specialist, said data shows that heart disease is also the highest cause of death in Indonesia.

“Riskesdas 2013 and 2018 show that there is a trend of increasing heart disease from 0.5 percent in 2013 to 1.5 percent in 2018,” said Erta in a webinar with the Ministry of Health on Monday (25/9).

Heart attacks are one of the scariest cardiovascular problems. A heart attack or myocardial infarction is a condition where the blood supply to the heart muscle is interrupted or stops suddenly.

Erta explained that disrupted blood supply is usually caused by blockage of the coronary arteries that carry blood to the heart.

“As a result, part of the heart muscle may experience damage or die due to lack of oxygen and nutrients,” he said.

Narrowing or blockage of blood vessels occurs due to atherosclerosis or plaque buildup in blood vessels. Plaque can come from fat or cholesterol. Plaque that gradually accumulates will trigger angina symptoms.

Angina, continued Erta, is a feeling of pain or pressure in the chest that occurs because the heart does not get enough oxygen from blood, which has a limited supply.

“Angina itself can be considered a heart attack, but it can also be an early sign or symptom that appears if your blood vessels are narrowing,” he said.

Because it is characterized by pain in the chest area, angina is sometimes confused with a different health problem. The following is the difference between angina and non-angina chest pain.

1. Location

Angina chest pain is specific to one location, namely in the chest near the sternum (the bone that connects the ribs). The pain will spread to the left area of the body such as the shoulder area, left arm, back, neck, jaw or stomach.

The location of non-anginal chest pain can vary depending on the source of the problem. Chest pain related to stomach acid is felt in the middle of the chest to the esophagus. Chest pain due to lung or breathing problems is usually felt when inhaling or coughing.

2. Characteristics

The characteristic chest pain of angina is described as heavy pressure in the chest. Erta said some people felt like they were being strangled, squeezed and burned. Pain may be accompanied by shortness of breath.

Meanwhile, the characteristics of non-angina pain really depend on the organs involved.

3. Duration

Angina usually lasts only a few minutes to less than 10 minutes. Then non-angina pain can last a long time and not go away.

Erta gave an example of pain due to lung or respiratory muscle problems. Symptoms like these can last for months.

4. Symptom conditions

Angina symptoms will get worse due to physical activity, cold weather and lots of wind. It is not surprising that those with angina symptoms can feel pain or heavy pressure in the chest after eating a heavy meal or waking up early.

Angina will be reduced by rest or drug intervention, namely sublingual nitrates.

“Nitrates usually quickly relieve angina symptoms within 5 minutes,” he explains.

Meanwhile, non-angina symptoms are more related to breathing and the position of the source of the problem. Non-anginal conditions will not improve with sublingual nitrate administration.

Apart from chest pain, there are symptoms equivalent to angina that should not be underestimated, namely discomfort in the stomach area and difficulty breathing. Discomfort in the stomach area is often mistaken for an ulcer. The difference with mag, discomfort appears during activities.

“If we can treat angina earlier, we can intervene earlier so that atherosclerosis doesn’t progress to a heart attack,” he added.
