Understanding and Troubleshooting the TPMS Warning Light

Especially when you have just changed a wheel, there is a certain risk of this warning light coming on, which may not be completely obvious and easy to understand. But it can also appear suddenly at other times of the season.

The symbol you see illustrated above lights up if there is little air in one or more tyres.

TEST: That’s how much worse the tires are with the wrong air pressure

Maybe you have a puncture

The system that detects changes in air pressure has been named Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)and is a required standard on all cars registered after 1 November 2014.

Simply explained, it is a monitoring system with sensors that are constantly located and feel whether the pressure in the tires is decreasing. If this happens, the symbol appears in the dashboard.

It is when you put on wheels that have been in the garage for a long time that you are most likely to get this warning, but you can also experience the light coming on in the middle of the season. Then there may be a leak somewhere which means that little by little the air seeps out of the tyre, or that the weather has become significantly colder since you last checked the pressure. The colder it gets, the more compressed the air becomes, which may cause you to have to refill air.

Sudden drops in air pressure can also occur, for example in the event of a puncture. In any case, the advice from NAF is crystal clear:

– If the warning light comes on while you are on the road, it is important to stop and check whether you have a puncture. If you don’t have it, it means that you have too little pressure in the tyres. Check the tire pressure at the nearest petrol station and top up the air, says Nils Sødal, senior communications advisor at NAF.

That is why it is important

Correct air pressure in the tires is important for good road grip, even and correct wear – and not least: less rolling resistance. Regardless of whether you have an electric car or a car that uses traditional fuel, you will be rewarded with a longer range if the rolling resistance is reduced.

After you have repaired a flat tire or refilled air, the sensors must be reset for the symbol to stop lighting up. On many cars you have to go into the menu system to reset, while on others it happens automatically after you’ve driven a few kilometres. See in the instruction book what applies to your car.

– If you can’t reset the system and remove the warning light, you probably have to phone a workshop so they can help you reset, advises Nils Sødal.
